Contrasting perceptions on alternative flood management and urban resilience as means of flood risk management- a comparison of Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Newcastle upon Tyne (UK)

My name is Felicity Street and I am a student at the University of Nottingham undertaking my dissertation research on alternative flood management (e.g. Blue-Green infrastructure and SuDS) and urban resilience.

I would be grateful if you would be willing to spend a few minutes to complete a short questionnaire and help me generate data for my research project. The questionnaire can be completed anonymously.

Please download the questionnaire, complete and email back to Felicity Street at lgyfs@nottingham.ac.uk

Background information

Threatened impacts of climate change in addition to population increase, urbanisation and intensification of agriculture have heightened the flood risk potential in the UK, and thus it has been suggested that a major change in attitude toward flooding is necessary.

I am therefore looking to compare the UK (using Newcastle upon Tyne as a case study) to the Netherlands (using Rotterdam as a case study- a city displaying examples of alternative flood management and urban resilience within its city), investigating perceptions on alternative flood management and urban resilience as a means of flood risk management.

I will be investigating whether perceptions are different, and if so whether this has led to differences in adoption of alternative flood management and urban resilient strategies as a means of flood risk management. Finally, I will determine whether differences in perception can be overcome in order to promote alternative flood management and urban resilience as a means of flood risk management in the UK.
